Our smallholding is tucked away in a secluded spot at the end of a rough track in the lush countryside between Dartmoor and Exmoor. This part of Devon is very much off the tourist trail and deeply rural. It’s rich in tradition, wildlife, picturesque villages and cosy pubs. There are many well-signposted walking routes nearby (including the Two Moors Way and the Devonshire Heartland Way) and innumerable smaller trails and tracks to explore. The spectacular tors of Dartmoor are just a short drive away.
We are Holly and Andrei - we arrived here a few years ago, as escapees from hectic city life and instantly fell in love with the area and the little thatched cottage that is now our home. Our smallholding has nearly 8 acres and on it we keep a small flock of rare breed sheep (for meat and wool), raise a few rare breed pigs (for their delicious pork), keep chickens (for fresh eggs) and grow a variety of vegetables. The wool from the sheep is spun and woven locally to make our specially designed, limited edition shawls, throws and scarves. Any income generated by The Smiling Sheep goes to subsidise the upkeep and welfare of the animals, which is our absolute priority.
Separate from the main house, we have a private little converted grainstore (known as The Linhay) available for bed and breakfast. This is a Sawday's Special Place and was featured in the Daily Telegraph last year as one of 10 British B&Bs with "real character". We produce delicious, home cooked (and home grown) food and a seasonal supper menu for those who want to just kick back and relax.
For those interested in exploring the beautiful countryside we provide tailor made walking breaks suited to all ages and abilities and (for those tempted by a new life in the country) we also offer a 2 day "Smallholder Starter" package.
Please have a look around our website (all the pictures were taken here) or have a look at The Smiling Sheep Facebook page for all the most up to date news.
We hope to see you soon!
